“You can do this style with any type of braid, and it works for casual days off or more formal events.”

Step 1: Prep your clean, dry hair with a little bit of Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil for slip.
Step 2: Pull hair back from your face and begin to braid it straight back, French or otherwise. Feel free to customize the look of your braid to suit your hair type.
Step 3: Once you’ve finished your braid, secure it with a small elastic.
Step 4: Hide the end of the braid by twisting it into a bun and pinning. If you’ve got short hair, simply tuck it into the base of the braid instead.
Step 5: Gently tug on the braid to loosen it and spray with Air Control or Control Force to hold it in place. Done and done!

The bubble braid is an easy twist on your go-to ponytail, and perfect for long hair.

Step 1: Prep with Shampure Dry Shampoo for texture and Light Elements Smoothing Fluid for slip; this makes your “bubble” easier to create. Start with a single ponytail at the top of your head, leaving most of your hair loose. Feel free to tease hair gently at the crown for extra volume if you like.
Step 2: Create ANOTHER ponytail underneath your first ponytail, including the hair from ponytail 1. You can hide the elastics by wrapping them with extra hair if you want.
Step 3: Pull a few pieces gently from the first ponytail, starting in the middle and then the sides, to make it “bubble.”
Step 4: Continue the “bubble” pattern until your style is to your liking.
Step 5: Finish with Air Control or Brilliant hair spray to hold your look!

THE Cut for the Fall

We just stumbled across this article today from the Zoe Report. Typically, the urge to go lighter and brighter with our hair tends to occur in the summer months. Come May and June, we start to witness those around us chopping their strands or going for softer hair hues. However, this year, it seems the short looks of summer are in it for the long haul. The micro bob, in particular, that has taken the season by storm is predicted to continue its reign well into the fall. For those not in the know, this cut consists of a slightly shorter bob that hits just above the neck. You’ve probably already seen it on celebrities such as Lucy Hale, Emma Roberts and the lovely Olivia Culpo. To help you get a kickstart on next season, we’ve rounded up our best examples of the cut, as styled on our favorite It girls. Take a look, and consider getting a little scissor happy. Call us at 207-251-4688 to make an appointment!

  1. image via Just off the beach hair– Simply run some Phomollient (mousse) through your hair right after your shower, and let air dry. Give a scrunch every now and then for some wave and when dry just brush the ends gently.

   2. (Medium to long) Cute Bun– Give the top of your hair a light tease then brush it back and secure into a bun. Pull down a few wisps around the perimeter. Add a bow for extra sweetness.

   3. (Medium to long) Touseled Bun– Pull your hair back into a simple low bun, leaving out some face-framing pieces. Give the pieces a quick bend with a curling wand or flat iron.

   4. (Medium to long) Whisper of a Wave– A simple bend with a flat iron is all you need to achieve this look. Give it a tousle all over when you’re done.

   5. (long hair) Classic Beach Waves– A curling wand is a must here to achieve this look. Just wrap random pieces, let cool and tousle.

  6. (Long Hair) Milk Maid Braid– Start the braid by bringing the hair to one side and begin braiding behind the ear. Bring the braid across the front and secure the end with bobbie pins. Pull some pieces out around the fringe.

7.(Long Hair) Fun Pony– Leave your hair natural and pull back into a high pony.  Tease the base of the pony for added volume.

   8. (Short to Long) Half-Up braid– Braid a piece of hair on either side of the part and secure the ends with elastics or bobbie pins. Wear the rest any way you wish.

  9. (Long) Fishtail– Follow this tutorial to learn how to master this fun braid.

They call them the dog days of summer — that stretch between late July and late August where the weather is hot, hot, hot and you’re ready for a little relief. We’re big fans of summer time, but the need to chill out on a 95 degree day (or more) is essential, so if you need a quick cooldown when the temperature skyrockets, try these go-to summer products.

Cooling Oil Balancing Oil Concentrate
Keep a rollerball of Cooling Oil with you at all times in the summer months for a quick fix of cooling aromaology wherever you may be; you can even roll it on to reduce tension. We use certified organic peppermint, blue chamomile and naturally-derived menthol to refresh your senses deliver a burst of cooling refreshment. Pro tip: Apply a little on the back of your neck or on a pressure point on a hot day to mimic the feeling of a light breeze. Ahhhhh.

A longtime Aveda favorite, Peppymint can be used as a quick breath refresher (just a few drops on your tongue will do it) or a minty mouth rinse when diluted in your water. It may be small, but its blend of cooling peppermint and anise packs a big punch.

Rosemary Mint Bath Bar
Sometimes you just want to get in the shower and scrub down from head to toe with a great bar of soap. Enter Rosemary Mint Bath Bar, which lightly exfoliates your skin as it cleanses and awakens your senses with our classic aroma of rosemary and peppermint. The Bath Bar also makes a great gift for any summer weekend host.

Sun Care Hair and Body Cleanser + Rosemary Mint Hand and Body Wash
After a long, hot day in the sun, cleanse your hair and skin with Sun Care. The color-safe formula gently removes chlorine, salt and product residue, while tamanu oil and organic coconut oil comfort your skin. The Sun Care aroma of certified organic neroli, ylang ylang and cistu (a flowering plant) feels summery and elegant at the same time.

If you’d prefer a different aroma, try the Rosemary Mint Hand and Body Wash in the shower to really perk you up post-pool day … or even on a Monday morning. (It’s basically like drinking a cup of coffee in your shower.)

Rosemary Mint Body Lotion
When it’s really hot outside, the last thing you want is a heavy body lotion. Rosemary Mint Body Lotion is lightweight and invigorating to revive and refresh your skin, making it the perfect choice after hours spent in the sun.

National Hair Loss Awareness Month

By the age of 35 nearly two-thirds of men will have experienced some form of hair loss. Men are not alone though, 40% of those experiencing hair loss are women. The most common form of hair loss is androgenic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern baldness. This is a genetic, unpreventable type of hair loss.

Those with androgenic hair loss have hair follicles that are sensitive to a hormone called  DHT or dihydrotestosterone. Exposure to DHT causes the follicles to shrink and the hair to fall out. In men, androgenic hair loss can show up as a receding hairline or thinning on the crown. For women, androgenic hair loss results in the widening of the hair part or a smaller ponytail.

Another common type of hair loss is involutional alopecia is the gradual thinning of hair due to age. Over the years, more hair follicles go into their resting phase, resulting in fewer hairs growing at any given time. Like androgenic alopecia, this type of hair loss is not preventable. Alopecia areata is the thinning of hair on the scalp and body, this type is usually not permanent.

Traction alopecia is caused by over-styling and pulling the hair, resulting in the damage of hair follicles and hair loss. In some cases, traction alopecia can result in permanent hair loss. Traction alopecia is most common in women who wear hair extensions or braids, which can pull on the hair and cause damage to the follicles.

Telogen Effluvium results in abnormal amounts of hair suddenly switch from the growing or resting phase to the shedding phase. Telogen effluvium is usually caused by a stressful event, such as a major surgery, drastic weight loss, or giving birth. Although hair may fall out in clumps, it will eventually grow back when stress levels return to normal.

Aveda’s Three Part Invati System is here to help

Blushing Brides

We are about halfway through our wedding season here in New England and we have had the chance to work with so many beautiful bridal parties. Here is a quick peak at some of the gorgeous women that have had their hair and/or makeup done by our team, we love them all!

Summer isn’t all cute dresses, sunny days and ice cream cones. It also means plenty of warm-weather activities, from countless weddings (especially if you’re of a certain age and all your friends are getting hitched) to long days at the beach or the pool to road trips with your friends or family. It’s all exciting, of course, but you may need a little help looking and feeling good from time to time. That’s where we come in!

These tried and true Aveda products will be your best friends through all the sun and fun you’ve got planned — even the stressful parts!

WEDDINGS – Hand Relief, Air Control, Cooling Oil
Ah, wedding season. If your weekends are packed with ceremonies and receptions, you’ll definitely need to keep your hands feeling soft and moisturized — after all, you’ll probably be meeting lots of new people and shaking tons of hands! Take a travel-size Hand Relief along, and while you’re at it, tuck a travel-size Air Control hair spray in your wedding bag just in case. It works to keep your style in place during a breezy outdoor ceremony and can help with static from your dress, too! Another pro tip? Grab Cooling Oil in a full-size bottle or rollerball if your feet hurt from dancing all night. If you had a few too many glasses of champagne and are feeling a bit hungover, use the rollerball to help soothe your headache.

FESTIVALS – Daily Light Guard, Feed My Lips
Music festivals mean long days spent in the sun, so be proactive and wear a hat! Load up on SPF, too; our Daily Light Guard SPF 30 is small so it’s easily portable, and it feels light and not sticky. If lots of Instagram moments are in your festival future, wear a bright and poppy lip color like Prickly Pear from our Feed My Lips lipstick line for the perfect pic.

BEACH DAYS – Daily Light Guard, Sun Care Protective Hair Veil, Texture Tonic
Obviously, you need to take SPF along to the beach, but you should also protect your Aveda hair color with Sun Care Protective Hair Veil. (It doesn’t take up much room in your beach bag, promise!) For post-beach hair, spritz your damp hair thoroughly with a travel-sized Texture Tonic spray for effortless, enhanced summer waves.

ROAD TRIPS – Be Curly Curl Enhancer (if you’re curly), Shampure Dry Shampoo, Chakra Spray, Peppymint
If a road trip is in your future, you need lots and lots of travel sizes! Luckily, plenty of your favorite Aveda products are available in smaller sizes, making them the perfect choice for a long car ride with your pals. We’d take Be Curly Curl Enhancer along as it defines waves and curls while preventing frizz — ideal for wash-and-go hotel stops. (Don’t forget your favorite Aveda shampoo and conditioner too!) Other road trip must-haves? A plethora of gentle elastics to keep your hair up and out of your face on a long stretch of road, Shampure Dry Shampoo to refresh on no-wash days,  a Chakra Spray and Peppymint … you’re in close quarters, after all.

FAMILY REUNIONS – Stress-Fix Concentrate
Family reunions mean one thing: Stress-Fix! Things can get chaotic, emotional and more than a bit stressful when the whole clan comes together, so depend on Stress-Fix Concentrate to help calm stress when the big day arrives. (Get one for your mom too, while you’re at it.)

Exfoliation is one of the most natural things in the world. Trees do it. Snakes do it. Lizards do it. And we humans do it too! Your skin turns over on a regular basis — usually around every 28 to 30 days — but sometimes, it could use a little help speeding up the process. If your skin is looking dull or you’re noticing flakiness or a rougher texture than normal, it could be a sign that it’s time to exfoliate. Exfoliation helps you renew your skin and helps your serums and moisturizers absorb better, giving you a beautiful, radiant glow.

The number one thing you should know about exfoliation before you start scrubbing at your face? Be gentle and listen to your skin! Helga Hefner, Aveda’s manager of Professional Spa Education, is a wealth of skin care knowledge — she travels around the country educating spa teams and aspiring estheticians and has some seriously glowing, gorgeous skin herself.

“The importance of exfoliation in your regimen is to help remove the excess buildup of dead, dull surface cells that accumulates on skin and allow the skin to renew itself more evenly,” she says. “If you have congested pores, for example, that’s a buildup. For a lot of skin challenges, buildup is at the root. That’s why it’s important to exfoliate.”

First, begin your daily exfoliation with the Tulasāra Radiant Facial Dry Brush. Helga actually helped create this innovative, super-soft facial brush. “We created ours because many on the market are way too aggressive on the face,” she explains. “Your face is more sensitive and vulnerable to the environment.” The brush was created in an oval shape with undulating bristles to contour to the curves and crevices of your face. For best results, Helga recommends using it on dry skin every morning or evening and sweeping in upward, circular motions for maximum exfoliation.

One of Helga’s favorite products for gentle, daily exfoliation is the Botanical Kinetics liquid Exfoliant, a biochemical exfoliant for gentle turnover. (Biochemical exfoliants use CHEMICALS to exfoliate the skin.) “It contains salicylic acid as the primary exfoliating ingredient – it’s formulated to be gentle yet powerful,” Helga says. The surface cells of your skin, called the stratum corneum, have bonds that keep them held together. They’ll naturally break due to natural daily friction, but exfoliants like the liquid Exfoliant helps dissolve them more quickly. Apply it in the evening with a cotton ball after cleansing but before you tone either once or twice daily, depending on your skin.

Once or twice a week, give your skin some extra exfoliation with a mechanical exfoliant like Botanical Kinetics Radiant Skin Refiner. (Mechanical exfoliants are things like scrubs and microdermabrasion treatments that use MOVEMENT to exfoliate the skin.) “It’s more aggressive exfoliation,” says Helga. “The key to using our Refiner is not to use a lot of pressure on the skin. Let the granules (bamboo extract particles) do the work. Applying more pressure creates unnecessary stimulation to the skin and can cause irritation and undue stress to the skin – be gentle!”

If you’re in need of a spa day — and who isn’t, honestly? — you’ll be happy to know that we offer three different professional treatments for exfoliation. Aveda spa treatments are priced by time increment, not service, so you can really tailor your 60 minutes to what your skin needs, and your esthetician will work with you to create the ideal regimen. “No two treatments are the same,” Helga says. “Our approach is to pick a focus – whatever will bring the biggest change in the skin – and exfoliation is usually at the top. It’s not the only thing we do, but it will give you the most visible, immediate results.”

However, Helga stresses being gentle and thoughtful with your skin. “Exfoliation is one of the most powerful methods of skin transformation, but it can also be the most damaging depending on what you’re using. Be gentle! Too much exfoliation can prematurely age the skin,” Helga says. “You don’t need to exfoliate something that isn’t ready to come off.” She notes that Aveda’s lineup of high performance skin care products and treatments are effective and safe to maintain integrity of the skin if used as directed. “When you exfoliate, you’re disputing the skin barrier, don’t be too aggressive!”

Post-exfoliation, help your skin recover with hydration! Helga loves the lightweight Botanical Kinetics Hydrating Treatment Lotion, a liquid lotion to help skin absorb more moisture and stay plump and fresh. Make sure your skin is fully saturated with the product — apply it to hands, press it into the skin and apply it again until your skin isn’t absorbing any more product. After you’re done, reach for your favorite Tulasāra Concentrate or serum and apply moisturizer as usual. You’ll be ready to glow and show off healthy-looking, radiant skin in no time at all, thanks to the beauty of plants and science!
