Go Dry for Clean H20

One of the greatest inventions of all time — as far as we’re concerned — is dry shampoo. How did we ever live without it? Being able to extend a blowout, add texture to your hair when styling, or just skip a shampoo and sleep in is THE. BEST. EVER. Aveda released their Shampure Dry Shampoo in 2015, and it quickly became a go-to for Artists and guests for its iconic aroma and non-aerosol formula. (Plus, people had been asking us to make a dry shampoo for ages, so it was about time!) Shampure Dry Shampoo was so popular that we also launched its sibling product, Shampure Thermal Dry Conditioner. Refresh your roots with Dry Shampoo and spritz midlengths and ends with Thermal Dry Conditioner for softness and heat protection on your non-wash days.

Another thing we love about Shampure Dry Shampoo? When you skip a shampoo and grab the dry stuff, you’re also saving water. It’s the perfect Earth Month product, as we devote all of April to raising awareness about clean water issues locally and around the world.

When you “go dry” for clean water this month, you’re making a difference — even if it feels small. When we say “go dry,” we don’t mean never shampooing your hair and only using dry shampoo for an entire month; there are plenty of ways you can conserve water, dry shampoo or no.

According to the EPA, the average American family uses more than 300 gallons of water per day at home. Here are a few seriously simple ways you can adjust your routine during Earth Month and beyond:

– Cut just three minutes from your shower and you could save about six gallons of water. (Hello, dry shampoo!) If you shower daily, you could save around 2,190 gallons (8,290 litres) of water a year!* (*Average shower in the U.S. uses 2 gallons per minute. Source: U.S. Geological Survey.)

– Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth and you’ll save approximately 50 gallons of water in a week.

– Skip meat one day a week and save hundreds of gallons of water. It takes about 1,840 gallons of water to produce a pound of meat. (*Source: USGS Water Science School)

– Make sure to switch all the lights off every day before you head to work and you can save about 32 gallons of water. It takes about two gallons (7.6 litres)* of fresh water to generate each kilowatt-hour of traditional electricity. So turn it off if you’re not using it! (*Source: National Renewable Energy Laboratory.)

– Make sure your washing machine and dishwasher are filled to capacity before running them to cut energy and water use. You can save even more by air-drying your clothes on a clothesline.

How will you make a difference for Earth Month 2018? We’ve got a few ways in which you can help out!

  1. Pledge online, follow this link to donate quickly and easily online to the Natural Resources Council of Maine.
  2. Come into the salon and donate to Natural Resources Council of Maine. We have 12 raffles generously donated by our staff ranging from a mani-pedi to a full foil and haircut. $5.00 gets you one entry, $20 earns you either 5 chances or a limited edition Aveda Light the Way Candle benefitting the Global Greengrants Fund plus one chace, and $40 earns you 15 chances!

Trust the Process, Going from Dark to Light Ain’t Easy

Weekly, almost daily, we get a client wanting to transition from dark brown or black to blonde. While we would LOVE to be able to perform this miracle in a single two hour appointment, the reality is that it is just not possible. Here is what we have to take into consideration to get you from Esmerelda to Elsa.

There are three main factors: History, Health & Budget

1. Hair History

Virgin? Box dyed? Black? Depending on the length of your hair you should divulge EVERY color or highlight your hair has seen even as far back as 5 years. This plays a major role in how fast and safely we can get you to where you want to be.

2. Hair Health

Maintaining the health and integrity of their hair is the most important reason for us taking our time, especially when it comes to color corrections. “Slow and steady wins the race” holds true. Depending on the strength of your hair, it can only handle so much in a short amount of time, so the time in between appointments allows the hair to rest and restore back to its strength with proper at-home and/or in salon conditioning and strengthening treatments.

3. Beauty Budget

In order to get you to where you want to be it is not only going to take time and patience, but it will can a financial investment. Not only for your lightening appointments, you may also need additional appointments for toning and treatments, but you should also plan on making an investment in the proper products to care for your hair at home as stated above.

At Home Spa Night

Image result for shampure and hand relief

Sometimes, you just want to stay inside. (Aveda’s HQ is in Minnesota, where it gets REALLY cold, so we know the feeling of wanting to hide behind closed doors for a night or two.) There’s nothing wrong with an evening in, especially when you decide to treat yourself to an at-home spa night. You’ll emerge feeling more relaxed — and more radiant — after a few hours of caring for you, top to toe. Sip on some Comforting Tea to make it feel like your favorite Aveda spa, right from the comfort of your own home.

To make the most of your winter evenings, try our tips for a DIY spa night with a few of your favorite Aveda products, and emerge in the spring feeling as beautiful and renewed as a butterfly.

Put your masque on
Treat your skin to what it’s been craving, whether that’s extra moisture or a deep cleanse. Our classic Botanical Kinetics Deep Cleansing Clay Masque and Intense Hydrating Masque deliver instant benefits — Deep Cleansing Clay is great for congested, oily skin, and Intense Hydrating Masque gives you an extra dose of soothing hydration when you’re feeling dry and irritated. If an overnight masque is more your thing, try the Tulasāra Wedding Masque Overnight for face and eye, which do their best work as you sleep to brighten skin and visibly firm over time.

Soak away your stress
If you’ve been feeling super stressed at work or at home, reach for Stress-Fix Soaking Salts and take a long, warm bath — no devices allowed! Lock the door, light a Shampure candle, and Zen out. Stress-Fix’s aroma of certified organic clary sage and lavender is actually PROVEN to reduce feelings of stress.

Put a Composition Oil to work
If you’ve visited an Aveda salon or spa, you may have experienced one of our Composition Oils via a chair massage or full-body massage. Find the one that speaks to you, whether it’s calming Shampure or the nourishing All-Sensitive Body Formula. You can use Composition Oils in a variety of ways, from massage to aromatherapy; check out eight ways to use Shampure Composition for some inspiration.

Bring back your glow
If you’ve noticed a serious loss of radiance since winter came to town, then spend a few minutes bringing back your outer glow with the Tulasāra Radiant Awakening Ritual. Simply buff your skin with the Radiant Facial Dry Brush; its rounded peaks help massage the skin and sweep away dull surface cells for instant exfoliation. Once you’ve exfoliated to your heart’s delight, apply the Radiant Oleation Oil to your skin and let it “steep” for four minutes or more. Do the crossword, call your mom or just enjoy a few quiet moments. Rinse and follow with your favorite Tulasāra Concentrate, Wedding Masque Overnight, or Renew Morning Crème for an even more vibrant glow.

Brighten up your whole body by making a date with Beautifying Radiance Polish. It’s basically a spa treatment in a jar, what with its uplifting aroma of certified organic rosemary, bergamot, and lavender and its formula of mineral-rich salt crystals and certified organic plant oils. Scrub away any dead, dull skin on your arms and legs, then apply a rich moisturizer once you’re done and get ready for spring!

Treat hands and feet
Your hands and feet do some serious work every day, so give them the love and care they deserve. Add a few drops of Cooling Oil to a foot soak and massage to relieve any tension in your soles.
Before you hit the pillow, apply Foot Relief to your soles and cover them with cozy socks to really soak in the moisture, then apply Hand Relief Night Renewal Serum and Hand Relief crème to hands to even the look of skin tone and intensely moisturize.

Go to bed early
It’s called beauty sleep for a reason. Catch up on your zzzz’s by setting an early bedtime and sticking to it. Don’t distract yourself with your phone, TV, or any other noisy device that might interfere with your calm vibes. Put your phone on silent and relax with a book, or simply enjoy the quiet until your eyes begin to close. Sweet dreams!

Earth Month 2018

Naviina Salon & Day Spa, in partnership with the Natural Resources Council of Maine and Aveda, is organizing a beach cleanup on Monday April 23, 2-6 pm. In anticipation of this event, we have been actively seeking sponsors to help raise money to be donated to the Natural Resources council of Maine. They focus on protecting the health of Maine’s rivers, lakes and wetlands; reducing the amount and toxicity of waste to conserve natural resources and stop toxic pollution, set Maine on a path to a prosperous sustainable energy future, and conserve Maines’ woods, wilderness and wildlife.

Aveda along with their partner salons have raised more than $50 million for clean water around the world in 88 countries since 2007. Along with raising money for the Natural Resources Council of Maine, we are also going to be selling Aveda’s Light the Way Candles. 100% of the $14 purchase price supports clean water projects around the globe through Global Greengrants Fund. The Global Greengrants Fund is a non-profit organization focused on mobilizing resources to support environmental sustainability and social justice around the world. This year the global goal is 5.8 million dollars.

There are two ways in which you can donate. If you visit us at the salon you can donate in person (please bring cash or a check). ANY amount is needed and welcome! As an added bonus, if you donate $5.00 or more you can enter one, or many depending on your donation, of our raffles donated generously by our staff! We have prizes ranging from Spa Pedicures to Full Foils and everything in between! If you cannot make it in you can donate online here →https://www.youcaring.com/thenaturalresourcescouncilofmaine-1134602, quick and easy!

Please help us exceed our previous donation high from the past two years of $2100.00!

Professional hair styling model in India.

What better way to commemorate International Women’s Day (March 8th) than by celebrating the women of the Umbari villages in India — the sourcing grounds of the certified organic turmeric, which is a star ingredient of our new Invati Advanced™ Solutions for Thinning Hair? The story begins with our partnership with Nisarga, an Indian firm that grows Ayurvedic herbs.

Through our quest for the highest quality certified organic turmeric and our work with Nisarga, we learned that the Umbari villages near where we source our turmeric did not have access to clean water year-round. During the sweltering summer months, the women of the village had to spend up to six hours per day traveling to distant locations to collect drinking water, often finding once they arrived that the water source was unfit for consumption.

Aveda joined forces with our global Earth Month partner Global Greengrants Fund and AWARD (Action for Women and Rural Development) to improve the community’s local water system. Now the 800 Umbari villagers have easy access to clean water year-round — and the women of the villages have more time to spend with their families, earn income and receive and provide education.

Clean water was just the beginning. Through other grants made by Aveda through Global Greengrants Fund, AWARD has worked with the women of Umbari to develop Kitchen Gardens at households and schools to help address the village’s nutrition.

Prior to a three-year AWARD project funded by Aveda, Umbari villagers did not grow vegetables on their own land due to a shortage of water, seeds and agricultural knowledge. The only available vegetables were expensive and sold far away, so the villagers weren’t able to consume enough of the nutrients they needed. Today, thanks to this project, more than 200 female farmers and four schools have set up “kitchen gardens” utilizing the clean waste water from their kitchens to better nourish the community, and they prepare vegetables like spinach, pumpkin, and okra.

Says Melissa Chelminiak, Director of Mission, Partner and Stakeholder Engagement at Aveda, “The kitchen garden project in Umbari is an excellent example of how empowering women and their families to be able to better provide for themselves can have a substantial positive impact in their communities and beyond.”

2018 Hair Trends

A new year brings a chance for new changes. Here is a short list of hair trends forcasted for 2018. Do you dare to take a leap in a new direction?

1.Dirty Blondes

Think a nice root smudge and ends toned beige to gold for this look. A refreshing step away from the platinum trend of the past.

From Selena Gomez to Lily Collins, dirty blonde is the new A-list hair colour trend du jour. Keep the roots dark, and the lengths a warm golden blonde to get the trend bang on.
'It used to be about getting your hair whiter than white because it was so unattainable,' says BLEACH creative director and rainbow hair pioneer Alex Brownsell. 'Golden shades with warmer tones all over is the new platinum.'

2. Fringed Bobs

Bobs are timeless but this takes it a step away with a shattered fringe to change things up.

One of the scarier trends to try in 2018, we guarantee you'll be seeing bobs with fringes everywhere. Round face? Never fear, the look is surprisingly wearable, just avoid a blunt cut block fringe and opt for an undone situation instead. It looks way more casual.
'I like to keep my own fringe on the longer side, below my eyebrows which is a lot more versatile,' says Kim K's BFF and hairstylist Jen Atkin. ' If you decide you don't like it anymore you can just tuck it away behind your ears. Also, always go for a lighter fringe, a block fringe can feel heavy with a lob.'

3. Big Hair, Don’t Care

Welcome back 80’s, we were missing you. Use caution though, no more aquanet, big with softness and texture is key to pull it off today.

4. The Pixie

Super easy, super sexy, super daring.
