Exfoliation is one of the most natural things in the world. Trees do it. Snakes do it. Lizards do it. And we humans do it too! Your skin turns over on a regular basis — usually around every 28 to 30 days — but sometimes, it could use a little help speeding up the process. If your skin is looking dull or you’re noticing flakiness or a rougher texture than normal, it could be a sign that it’s time to exfoliate. Exfoliation helps you renew your skin and helps your serums and moisturizers absorb better, giving you a beautiful, radiant glow.

The number one thing you should know about exfoliation before you start scrubbing at your face? Be gentle and listen to your skin! Helga Hefner, Aveda’s manager of Professional Spa Education, is a wealth of skin care knowledge — she travels around the country educating spa teams and aspiring estheticians and has some seriously glowing, gorgeous skin herself.

“The importance of exfoliation in your regimen is to help remove the excess buildup of dead, dull surface cells that accumulates on skin and allow the skin to renew itself more evenly,” she says. “If you have congested pores, for example, that’s a buildup. For a lot of skin challenges, buildup is at the root. That’s why it’s important to exfoliate.”

First, begin your daily exfoliation with the Tulasāra Radiant Facial Dry Brush. Helga actually helped create this innovative, super-soft facial brush. “We created ours because many on the market are way too aggressive on the face,” she explains. “Your face is more sensitive and vulnerable to the environment.” The brush was created in an oval shape with undulating bristles to contour to the curves and crevices of your face. For best results, Helga recommends using it on dry skin every morning or evening and sweeping in upward, circular motions for maximum exfoliation.

One of Helga’s favorite products for gentle, daily exfoliation is the Botanical Kinetics liquid Exfoliant, a biochemical exfoliant for gentle turnover. (Biochemical exfoliants use CHEMICALS to exfoliate the skin.) “It contains salicylic acid as the primary exfoliating ingredient – it’s formulated to be gentle yet powerful,” Helga says. The surface cells of your skin, called the stratum corneum, have bonds that keep them held together. They’ll naturally break due to natural daily friction, but exfoliants like the liquid Exfoliant helps dissolve them more quickly. Apply it in the evening with a cotton ball after cleansing but before you tone either once or twice daily, depending on your skin.

Once or twice a week, give your skin some extra exfoliation with a mechanical exfoliant like Botanical Kinetics Radiant Skin Refiner. (Mechanical exfoliants are things like scrubs and microdermabrasion treatments that use MOVEMENT to exfoliate the skin.) “It’s more aggressive exfoliation,” says Helga. “The key to using our Refiner is not to use a lot of pressure on the skin. Let the granules (bamboo extract particles) do the work. Applying more pressure creates unnecessary stimulation to the skin and can cause irritation and undue stress to the skin – be gentle!”

If you’re in need of a spa day — and who isn’t, honestly? — you’ll be happy to know that we offer three different professional treatments for exfoliation. Aveda spa treatments are priced by time increment, not service, so you can really tailor your 60 minutes to what your skin needs, and your esthetician will work with you to create the ideal regimen. “No two treatments are the same,” Helga says. “Our approach is to pick a focus – whatever will bring the biggest change in the skin – and exfoliation is usually at the top. It’s not the only thing we do, but it will give you the most visible, immediate results.”

However, Helga stresses being gentle and thoughtful with your skin. “Exfoliation is one of the most powerful methods of skin transformation, but it can also be the most damaging depending on what you’re using. Be gentle! Too much exfoliation can prematurely age the skin,” Helga says. “You don’t need to exfoliate something that isn’t ready to come off.” She notes that Aveda’s lineup of high performance skin care products and treatments are effective and safe to maintain integrity of the skin if used as directed. “When you exfoliate, you’re disputing the skin barrier, don’t be too aggressive!”

Post-exfoliation, help your skin recover with hydration! Helga loves the lightweight Botanical Kinetics Hydrating Treatment Lotion, a liquid lotion to help skin absorb more moisture and stay plump and fresh. Make sure your skin is fully saturated with the product — apply it to hands, press it into the skin and apply it again until your skin isn’t absorbing any more product. After you’re done, reach for your favorite Tulasāra Concentrate or serum and apply moisturizer as usual. You’ll be ready to glow and show off healthy-looking, radiant skin in no time at all, thanks to the beauty of plants and science!

SOS! Summer Beauty Emergencies, Solved.

Did you have a little too much fun in the sun? Is summer’s heat and humidity making your hair poof like crazy? While summer weather is amazing, it can come with its fair share of beauty emergencies.

Summer heat can really up your oil production, especially if your skin is oilier by nature. Try Botanical Kinetics Purifying Gel Cleanser to gently remove oil and impurities when you cleanse, and use the Oil Control Lotion to help absorb any surface oils instantly while still hydrating skin. To reduce excess oil during the day, try blotting papers or spritz your face with Botanical Kinetics Toning Spray to balance and refresh your skin. It feels great on a hot day too — we always recommend keeping it in the fridge to really cool things down when the temp skyrockets.

If your skin feels dry and hot, cool down with the Botanical Kinetics Intense Hydrating Masque. It feels amazing when you leave it in the fridge overnight and apply it to warm skin the next day. Rosewater helps tone and refresh, while sodium hyaluronate, which is a sugar-derived humectant, helps to deliver essential hydration to thirsty skin. The masque hydrates and cools your summer skin, so make it a weekly habit!

If you notice your makeup is dripping down your face on hot days, switch from a liquid formula to a powder. Our Global Artistic Director for Makeup Janell Geason recommends keeping pressed powder on hand when you know you’re going to be sweating, as well as blotting papers and Toning Mist.

For anyone with waves, curls or frizz-prone hair, humidity can be a real pain for your hair. If you like to wear your hair sleek and straight, prep with Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother to help defend against humidity for up to 12 hours, and pair it with the Glossing Straightener or Naturally Straight. If you like to airdry, the Nourishing Styling Crème will smooth hair and add moisture while locking out frizz.

If you’ve got curls or waves, you can use Be Curly Curl Enhancer and Nourishing Styling Crème together when air-drying to define waves and curls while reducing frizz, or use Be Curly Style-Prep and Curl Enhancer before diffusing your hair. Control Force will also keep your hair, well, under control during humidity, so use a few spritzes as a finishing touch and say bye to frizz.

Hey, it happens. If you’ve noticed your Aveda color is fading faster than a summer sunset, protect it every time you shampoo with Color Conserve shampoo and conditioner. Sun Care Protective Hair Veil protects hair from sun exposure to minimize damage and dryness, and it’s the perfect size for your beach bag.

Long days in the sun and surf can make your hair thirsty. We love using the Sun Care After-Sun Hair Masque to moisturize hair with the help of plant oils, and it doesn’t hurt to toss a Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil into your beach bag to moisturize during the day. If your hair really needs help, visit your favorite Aveda salon for a conditioning Botanical Therapy treatment, or try using the Dry Remedy Moisturizing Masque once a week to intensely moisturize your hair.

If your feet are in need of some TLC this summer, treat them to Foot Relief! (You can even add a little Cooling Oil for extra refreshment.) Use it overnight with socks, or simply make it a habit once a day to moisturize your skin and get your soles in shape for sandal season.

Shower Filters for Improved Hair and Skin

Many people aren’t aware of this but the water we shower in daily can have some pretty negative effects on our hair and bodies. Itchy, irritated skin, weak hair, and even hair loss. Add in the fact that hard water also affects hair color and it’s even more of an annoyance. Luckily there is a solution to this problem, an inexpensive shower filter that you can easily install yourself! Just like we like to filter the water we drink, many people benefit from filtering the water that is touching our skin and hair.

Various studies have shown that weak hair and itchy dry skin can be a result of the water that we shower in. What is it in our water that causes this? Heavy metals (think mercury and lead) and disinfectants such as chlorine. There is also potential for bacteria and pesticides to enter your water supply.  Shower filters can give you noticeably better shower experience even after the first time, just read the reviews of the recommended filters below.

Recommended Shower Filters

Aquabliss High Output Universal Shower Filter– This filter has top ratings and reviews. It Removes Chlorine, heavy metals (lead, mercury, nickel, chromium), bacteria, pesticides, and inhibits the growth of scale, algae, fungi, and mold.

Hair and Face Prep for the Bridal Party

Wedding hair and makeup are our specialty and we often get asked how the bridal party should have their hair before we arrive. Freshly washed? A few days post shampoo? Wet? Dry? Here is a rundown of what we prefer for the day of the i do’s.

Q: Should I was my hair the day of the wedding or a few days prior?

We prefer hair to be (mostly) clean. Try and wash your hair either the night or morning before your appointment. We don’t want to have to fight with the products you’ve been layering on for a few days, it can make for a frizzy mess. A bit of light mousse or hairspray is totally fine. We can make your hair “dirty” with our products.

Q: Should my hair be wet or dry?

It depends. If you are having a traditional updo or curled style then dry is always best (additional charges may apply if we have to take the time to dry it beforehand). If you are having a blowout at the salon we will wash it for you, however if we are working onsite we will need you to wash it yourself and arrive with it wet. If you do apply product before or after blowdrying, please use only a light mousse or hairspray. Do not using anything stiff or greasy.

Q: How should I care for my hair in the months before my wedding?

We always recommend keeping your hair its healthiest, that means regular trims and deep conditioning at least once a week.

Q: How long before the big day should I have my hair colored.

Hair grows on average about a half-inch a month, to look the freshest please have your color or highlights retouched no longer than 2 weeks before.

Q: How should I prepare my face for makeup?

A clean face is preferred and will hold makeup the best. We have all of the product we need to prep for and finish your look. You will only need lipstick to retouch with throughout the day or evening which can be brought by you or purchased from our salon (if we are working on location we will not have retail colors available so please purchase during your trial).

Leanne + Sean

Leanne was not our typical bride who books her hair trial months before her wedding day, she came in the day before her wedding (smart actually!) with loads of hair and wishes for an upstyle to last through the night. She ended up with exactly what she wanted. Check out the photo of the veil being airlifted during her ceremony, not only did her veil hold securely, there was not a hair out of place afterward! We loved working with Leanne and her bridesmaids, I think it’s safe to say we’re hair besties now. Congratulations Leanne and Sean ♥

How to Use Hand Relief

Pardon the pun, but if you keep Hand Relief close at hand, you won’t regret it! Many Aveda fans keep a small tube in their car, handbag, at work, by the sink … the options are endless, and this rich, moisturizing crème is easy to get obsessed with.

Why it works:
Hand Relief deeply moisturizes your dry hands with Andiroba oil and other plant hydrators. They help protect skin’s moisture barrier, sealing in softness through three hand washes.

How to use:
Put it on your hands. Rub it in.

Great job!

OK — that’s not the whole story. Make using Hand Relief a habit. Often, we neglect the skin on our hands until it’s too dry. Hands can also be one of the first places to show signs of aging, so it’s important to protect them. When you’re finished washing your hands or showering, apply Hand Relief to moist skin to really lock in that hydration and keep your hardworking hands feeling soft and smooth.

Use it with:

Really treat your hands by gently exfoliating them with Botanical Kinetics Radiant Skin Refiner, then applying Hand Relief for even more moisture absorption. Nightly, you can try its companion product, Hand Relief Night Renewal Serum, to help reduce the appearance of any dark spots, plump skin and smooth fine lines. Don’t forget about Foot Relief for your feet!

Our manager of Professional Spa Education, Helga Hefner, also likes to pair Hand Relief with Daily Light Guard SPF 30. When you’re driving, you don’t think about the sun exposure from sunlight coming through your windows. Help protect your hands by keeping Daily Light Guard and a travel-size Hand Relief in your car!
