How Does Hair Grow?

For centuries, long thick hair has been one of the ultimate signs of beauty. Other trends have changed over the years, but relatively long well-styled hair is considered attractive to this day. In most cultures, this view applies to both women and men.

Though hair is an important part of the way we see ourselves, we don’t tend to think about the biology of hair growth. Exactly how does hair grow? And what can you do if you want better hair?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, human hair grows about half an inch per month. But it grows in different stages and there are various factors that can influence the growth.

Each person has a specific type of hair with a distinct texture, look, and feel. At first glance, hair can be curly, wavy, or straight. Regardless of the form, the strands are either thick or thin. Some people have fine hair, which is usually described as skinny, and others have fat or coarse hair.

Your genes control the look and feel of your hair. But other factors also come into the equation when it comes to hair growth. Your overall health and diet play a major role in the health of your hair. Hence, excessive hair loss and poor growth can be indicators of certain medical conditions or poor nutrition. And then there’s the question of age.

The first signs of change usually come as you enter your 30s. The hair follicles start producing less melanin, the pigment responsible for color, causing your hair to go grey. This is also determined by your genes and other than trying to dye the hair, there is little you can do to stop it.

With age, your hair also becomes thinner and grows at a much slower rate. Some of the follicles you’re born with stop growing new hair altogether. Men might spot the first signs of baldness around the age of 30. Male pattern baldness is a widespread experience, and it’s related to testosterone fluctuations as men grow older.

On the other hand, some seniors might experience increased hair growth in odd places. Men usually get more hair in the eyebrows, nose, and ears as they age. Older women might be bothered by stubborn hair around the lips and chin.

Hair follows three distinct growth stages:

This is the stage during which your hair grows actively. It usually lasts between two and eight years, growing at the average rate of half an inch a month.

The hair stops growing in the catagen phase. But it still stays in place for up to six weeks.

This is the fall out stage and telogen spans over the period of about three months.

On average, up to 95% of the hair on your head is in the anagen phase. The remaining percentage goes to the telogen phase, and it’s normal to lose up to 150 hairs a day.

Luckily, there is. The anagen phase is influenced by hair length and by the follicle’s ability to multiply and produce new hair. Research into the exact mechanism behind this process is still ongoing and you shouldn’t expect miraculous hair growth. Nevertheless, there are things you can do to keep the hair healthy and promote follicle productivity.

You might not be aware of the fact that your body demands a lot of energy to efficiently grow hair. Consequently, a balanced diet is one of the main ways to maintain desirable hair growth. In addition, some supplements may help.

A 2015 study has shown that omega 3 and 6 supplements minimize hair loss for women. In addition, the women who took part also had better hair thickness. Lack of zinc can be one of the major factors that expedite hair loss. But supplementation works only if there is a zinc deficiency in the first place. Research confirms that some protein supplements help as well.

It also doesn’t hurt to keep vitamin C levels high. This vitamin has antioxidant properties that may prevent the thinning and graying of hair.

Men who struggle with hair loss might find pumpkin seed oil to be a lifesaver. In fact, it is known to increase the amount of hair by an amazing 40%. Mineral, castor, and coconut essential oils also help because they prevent the damage that impairs hair growth.

It’s worth pointing out that these oils shouldn’t be applied directly onto the skin.

The studies are still new and limited but there is some evidence that caffeine promotes hair growth. This is why hair-growth shampoos have it as an active ingredient.

Besides preventing hair loss, some topical ointments can actually help with hair growth. Topical products that contain melatonin increase hair density. Those who wish to slow down their hair loss may also consider topical minoxidil and ketoconazole shampoos.

Products that contain keratin are the way to go for many people who want to improve their hair growth. And a study confirms its beneficial properties, as the participants had a 12.5% hair loss reduction and a 5.9% better strength. What’s more, their hair had more luster and brightness as an added benefit.

Protein hair treatments are especially important for those who apply heat and frequently style their hair. In addition to promoting growth, proteins keep the hair safe from environmental and chemical damage.

Applying common coconut oil is one of the best ways to replenish the lost proteins. It is advisable to do it before and after you wash the hair. But too much protein puts your kidneys at risk, so it’s best to be careful with supplements.

Ample amounts of protein are found in yogurt, vegetables, and nuts. This basically brings you back to a well-balanced diet which can be regarded as one of the best ways to improve the health of your hair.

How does hair grow? It doesn’t grow at the same speed throughout your life. As you age, your hair growth will slow down.

Sulfates 101

If you’re interested in hair care and beauty, you’ve probably heard about sulfates in some form. “Sulfates” has been a beauty buzzword for the past few years, with some saying to stay far, far away from them and others wondering, “What’s the big deal?” If you’ve ever wondered about sulfates, here’s what you need to know.

Sulfates can be cleansers and foaming agents. They’re used in a number of personal care products, like toothpaste, shampoos and cleansers because of their superior formulation properties, including for cleansing, lathering and rinsing thoroughly.

We do — but there’s a reason! Every Aveda product contains an array of ingredients, like essential oils, botanicals and other functional ingredients. Every product is carefully formulated to support product performance, safety and our Mission. We use both sulfate-based and non-sulfate-based cleansers in our shampoos and other cleansers to achieve the desired end benefit. We think it’s more about using the right surfactant blend for a product than whether the product simply contains sulfates. When we decide to use a sulfate-based cleanser in any product to enhance performance, we use ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS) and sodium coco sulfate, both of which are plant-derived from coconut, gentle and have a history of safe usage. We don’t use sulfate cleansers such as sodium lauryl sulfates (SLS) or SLES in any Aveda products.

Here’s an example! Think about Pure Abundance Volumizing Shampoo versus Damage Remedy, Dry Remedy and Invati Advancedshampoos. Pure Abundance creates big, cascading bubbles that remove product build-up and residue while leaving your hair fresh and full of volume. We optimize the blend of surfactants, including adding sodium coco sulfate, for this specific product and the desired end benefit. Damage Remedy, Dry Remedy and Invati Advanced shampoos use sulfate-free surfactant blends to optimize the texture and desired performance of the shampoos; that’s why they have a dense, creamy lather instead of airy bubbles. It’s all about the end result! If you want your hair to feel light, fresh and clean, opt for products with sulfate-based cleansers. If you don’t love bubbles and prefer a more hydrating shampoo, go for products without. It’s that simple.

Aveda Men Pure-Formance Shampoo, Invati Advanced Exfoliating Shampoo, Be Curly Co-Wash, Invati Men Exfoliating Shampoo, Damage Remedy Restructuring Shampoo, Pramasāna Purifying Scalp Cleanser, Scalp Benefits Balancing Shampoo and Dry Remedy Moisturizing Shampoo are all free of sulfate cleansers.

We do! Botanical Kinetics Exfoliating Crème Cleanser, Purifying Crème Cleanser and Purifying Gel Cleanser, along with Stress-Fix Crème Cleansing Oil and Beautifying Crème Cleansing Oil, are all free of sulfated cleansers. So are Outer Peace Foaming Cleanser and Pure Comfort Eye Makeup Remover.

Even icons like Shampure and Rosemary Mint need a makeover once in awhile. The shampoo and conditioner duos for two of our most beloved classics got some snazzy new packaging and new names just in time for 2019. Shampure also got an upgrade; the formula was slightly changed to give you more of what you love. But don’t start worrying that your favorite products will no longer work the same way! Here’s exactly what to know about these updates; we’re pretty excited about them, and we think you will be too.

What’s with the new names?
We added a few words to the existing names to make it easier for guests like you to identify which products are best suited for your hair type and concerns.

Shampure Shampoo and Conditioner is now Shampure Nurturing Shampoo and Nurturing Conditioner.

Rosemary Mint Shampoo and Conditioner is now Rosemary Mint Purifying Shampoo and Weightless Conditioner.

Have the product formulas changed?
Shampure Nurturing Shampoo and Conditioner formulas have changed. What’s different? A key difference is that we removed silicones and added Abyssinian oil in their place.

What’s Abyssinian oil?
Abyssinian oil is a natural silicone alternative that mimics the performance and feel of silicones, is lightweight and helps provide lasting nourishment for your hair.

What about Rosemary Mint? Is it different too?
Rosemary Mint Purifying Shampoo has not changed. For Rosemary Mint Weightless Conditioner, we removed a trace amount of an herb. There’s no perceivable difference in the performance of the conditioner, just a slight change in color. Otherwise, it’s the same invigorating Rosemary Mint you know and love.

Have my favorite aromas changed?
No! Both aromas are the same.

If I have dry hair, should I use Rosemary Mint?
Rosemary Mint Purifying Shampoo and Weightless Conditioner help gently clarify the hair, add weightless body and enhance shine. If you have dry hair, we recommend Cherry Almond Softening Shampoo and Conditioner for mildly dry hair and Dry Remedy Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner for very dry hair.

Are these products color-safe?
They are! You can suds up with Shampure and Rosemary Mint shampoos without harming your Aveda color.

If you’re loving Shampure and Rosemary Mint’s new look, share your shelfies with #SmellsLikeAveda.

Most of you know and love Naviina for our hair care but were you aware that we also treat skin as well? If not, let me introduce our esthetics duo,  Kendra and Abby.

Kendra is licensed in NH & ME. She is a certified lash extension instructor.  Kendra also recently went back to school and just earned her Instructors License in Esthetics. She is very knowledgeable and is always eager to talk skincare with anyone! If you see her around the salon don’t be shy about asking her any skincare questions!

If you prefer to style your hair a certain way after it’s been washed, chances are you may blow dry your hair on the regular, whether it’s straight and sleek or diffused and curly. That blow dry may also take a ton of your precious time, and perhaps you aren’t getting quite the same results as you do at the salon. Never fear! We chatted with the ultimate blow dry pros, Aveda Artists, and they shared what you should have in your arsenal for the best at-home blow dry.

Invest in the best tools you can comfortably afford. “I believe your blow dry can only be as good as your tools,” says David Anders Palmira. The next time you’re at the salon, ask your Artist what they recommend, or upgrade from the old dryer you’ve been using for years. For smoothing and straightening, Monica Stevens uses ceramic (tourmaline, magnesium or ion-inflused) flat irons.

Choose your towel wisely. Whatever you do, be gentle! “Hair is in its most fragile state when wet, so make sure you squeeze out excess moisture with a towel and don’t rub. This can cause breakage and split ends,” says Darren Summors of Australia. Try a microfiber towel or an old T-shirt to help reduce stress to the hair.

Make sure you have the right accessories for your dryer. “For frizz-free results, always make sure you use a nozzle on your dryer,” says Darren. “This controls the airflow and condenses it to only the section of hair you are drying.”

And of course, don’t forget NEW Speed of Light Blow Dry Accelerator! Saturate your damp hair with the product to speed up your blow dry, protect from thermal damage from blowdrying, calm static and make your hair feel soft and smooth.

“It’s hard to overuse the product … it doesn’t weigh the hair down and gives a nice polished finish!” says David.

Speed of Light works for waves and curls too. If you’re a fan of diffusing your hair, you can definitely use Speed of Light to help speed up the process — pair it with Texture Tonic for undone beachy texture. We have a feeling Speed of Light will soon become a mainstay in your styling routine once you give it a try.

Winter Hair & Skin Woes

Related imageWinter brings about fun things in the northeast such as skiing, sledding, and snowshoeing, but it also brings about some not so fun things. I’m talking about changes not only in our hair and skin. Cold air + low humidity + dry indoor heat = sallow, parched, cracked skin, scalp itch, and flyaway hair. We all need to change our skin and haircare routines to help combat these issues. Here are some tips and product recommendations to keep you moisturized and looking your best this winter.

Hydrate Your Skin

Proper hydration is key to keeping the cracks and scales away in the winter. Moisturize often, starting with your body as soon as you exit the shower. Aveda’s Stress-fix™ Body Lotion is perfect for this and has the added benefit of it’s aroma which includes certified organic lavender, lavandin and clary sage. If your hands and feet are problem areas, we recommend Aveda’s line of hand & foot care which are formulated to intensely moisturize, this line is a favorite of everyone who tries it.

To hydrate your delicate facial skin, Botanical Kinetics is amazing. For most skin types the Intense Hydrating Soft Creme is great, it instantly replenishes skins moisture and seals in deep hydrating energy to last through the day. The Intense Hydrating Rich Creme is great for those with extremely dry skin.

Put Moisture Back in Your Hair

Un-moisturized hair lacks shine, body, and movement. It can also have an increase in split ends and be static ridden. To add some brilliance to your dull tresses a good place to start will be with a weekly masque to replenish those tresses. Aveda’s Dry Remedy Moisturizing Masque leaves hair soft, supple, and shiny. For those with extra dryness, you may try the Dry Remedy Shampoo and Conditioner as well as the Dry Remedy Oil.

Additional Recommendations

In addition to the products we recommended, we also have a few other tips.

  1. First, don’t turn up the shower too hot. Increasing the heat in the air or in water can wreak havoc on your hair and skin.
  2. Exfoliation is amazing to slough off dry, rough patches. Don’t forget to moisturize afterward.
  3. Use a humidifier, the added moisture is good for the whole body, especially during cold and flu season.
  4. Exercise and hydrate from the inside, a busy body is a happy body and drinking water is so important to maintain moisture throughout.

The blow dry can be one of the most time-consuming parts of your hair care routine. If you’ve got long or curly hair, your blow dry time can feel especially long and difficult, and you might feel like you spend more time with your blow dryer than your friends and family!

We feel you. That’s why we created Speed of Light Blow Dry Accelerator, which helps protect hair from thermal damage while blow drying, reduces blow dry time, tames static and leaves hair feeling soft and smooth. Of course, we had to do a lot of testing to get it just right, so we had our network of Aveda Artists help us develop and perfect the product. They spend hours blow drying every day, and were excited to work on creating a blow dry accelerator that really works!

Now that the product is available to the whole world, we wanted to get their expert help again, so we had them share their best tips for the ultimate blow dry — all using Speed of Light, of course.

“Start the process while still in the shower by combing your conditioner from your mid-lengths to ends to keep hair detangled and soft.”
-Timothy Walkinhood, @timothywalkinhood

“Leave your hair in a towel turban for at least 5 minutes for mid-length hair and at least 10 minutes for longer hair so your hair is damp, not wet.”
-Bea Carmichael, @beacarmichael13

“For curly hair, clarify and cleanse first to remove product and excess oils, then follow with need-based shampoo, like Dry Remedy or Damage Remedy. Deep condition with the corresponding treatment for 5-10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with warm water until it runs clear. Skip the towel-dry — it can make the blow dry more difficult.”
-Monica Stevens, @moknowshair

“Sectioning hair doesn’t have to be time consuming. Three to five sections is enough! Make sure you dry the front sections of your hair first, and anywhere you have cowlicks or double crowns. Hair is finer and dries quicker around the hairline, and it’s easier to blow dry this with a bit moisture still in the hair.”
-Darren Summors

“I like to keep it simple by working in 3 sections—the front bang section the sides and the back.”
-Harmony Beus, @harmonize_beauty

“Don’t stop once the hair is dry! There are three stages to drying hair: wet and shiny, dry and matte and dry and shiny. Once the hair is dry in a particular section, it’s important to continue going over that section for 3-4 more passes to bring out natural shine.”
-David Anders Palmira

“Straighten or smooth with a ceramic flat iron, and apply your finisher of choice. I like Light Elements Smoothing Fluid for shine and Brilliant or Firmata hair sprays for hold, if needed.”
-Monica Stevens

“Finish with a cold shot from the blow dryer, directing the air flow to the ground. This helps to seal up the cuticle of the hair and help set your style.”
-Harmony Beus
